To describe the spectacular Thrissur Pooram Festival of Kerala in a single sentence, it is a festival of light and color, percussion and elephants. Thrissur Pooram is, in fact the conclusion of the eight-day Utsavam of nine temples of Kerala.
Celebrated in the months of Medom (April-May), Thrissur Pooram involves a procession of richly caparisoned elephants that are brought in from various neighboring temples to the Vadakunnatha temple. The Pooram festival is also well known for the magnificent display of fireworks.
Each elephant participating in the festival bears an umbrella holder, a peacock fan carrier and a yak-tail flywhisk wielder. As the elephants row up side by side, they are flanked by the percussion and wind orchestras. With rhythmic precision, a new display of brilliant ceremonial umbrellas blossoms over the elephants and the supporting crowd applauds in tune with the orchestra. This goes on till sunset after which the devotees and the spectators are treated to a breath
Between the two lines of elephants stand percussion and wind orchestras. As each orchestra reaches a crescendo, a new display of brilliant ceremonial umbrellas blossoms over the elephants and the supporting crowd applauds. This continues till sunset when the elephants depart and late at night, the darkness explodes with a magnificent fireworks display.
