The festival of Thirunakkara Utsavam is celebrated within the precincts of Mahadeva Temple at Kottayam, which is situated atop the Thiruvakkara Hill. The Mahadeva Temple is one of the most important Siva temples of Kerala and is renowned for its historical importance, antiquity and sanctity.

The grandest festival of this temple is the "Arattu Utsavam" lasting for ten days from the 1st Meenam (March-April), which is attended by hundreds of thousands of people, irrespective of caste or creed
