The festival of Arattu is actually the closing ceremony of the ten-days long festival held in the Lord Padmanabha temple at Thiruvananthapuram. The Arattu Festival actually refers to the ceremonial procession of the Lord at the close of the ten-day temple festival.
On the occasion of the Arattu Festival at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the Ex- Maharaja himself visits the temple and conducts some rituals, after which a procession is taken out through the eastern gate with the accompaniment of nagaswarams, drums and other musical instruments. The procession heads towards the Sanghumugham Beach along with caparisoned elephants. As the procession leaves the ramparts of the fort, a salute of 21 guns is made. On reaching the beach the ceremonial bath is taken in the sea.
