The Arattu festival takes place in the famous Sree Krishnaswamy temple at Ambalapuzha; hence this important festival has come to be known as the Ambalapuzha Arattu Festival for many. The history behind this famous temple is fascinating. The Sree Krishnaswamy temple was established by the Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran in the year 790 M.E. He offered his state to Sree Krishna and ruled the country as his regent after assuming the name of Deva Narayana.

The Arattu festival at Ambalapuzha commences by a flag hoisting ceremony on the Atham day in Meenam, which is usually March or April. The important Arattu Utsavam, however, takes place on the Thiruvonam day in Meenam
