According to historical records the Aarattupuzha temple festival used to be the largest temple festival in Kerala prior to the Thrissur Pooram and most of the Thrissur temples used to participate in this major annual event. During one such Aarattupuzha celebrations the temples of Thrissur were prevented from participating in the festivities and rituals by the ruler of Peruvanam area of Cherpu. Prince Rama Varma inaugurated the Thrissur Pooram festival so that the temples of Thrissur could pay homage to the deity Lord Vakunnathan at the Vadakunnathan temple.
The Thrissur Pooram temple festival has always been open to the common man and people from all walks of life come together during the Malayalam month of Medam to celebrate the Thrissur Pooram temple festival.
As tradition goes the main temple where the celebration is held at the Sree Vadakkunnathan temple. The other temples that participate in the festival are the Paramekkavu temple, Tiruvambadi temple, Neithilakkavu temple, Kanimangalam temple, Chembukkavu temple and the Panamukkampilly temple among others.
The Thekkinkadi maidan that is a part of the Vadakumnathan temple premises is the main venue where the cultural events and various competitions take place.
