Getting around in Kerala is quite easy, given the various means of transportation options. The traffic on the roads of Kerala can be generally chaotic but rest assured, once you reach your destination, the journey would be worth it.
The various means of getting around in Kerala are:
Bus
If you are traveling Kerala on budgetary constraints, the bus is the best way to travel. Dirt cheap and safe enough, buses can be used for short, medium and long distance travel. The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation operated bus stations to catch buses to any place.
Train
Trains are convenient for longer distances and are cheap. Generally booking seats is not necessary when traveling shorter distances within Kerala during the day.
Auto rickshaws
Auto rickshaws are the three-wheelers that you can catch easily anywhere in Kerala. The minimum charge will be Rs 6 up to a distance of 1.5 km beyond which the rate per running kilometer will be Rs 3.50 or 14 paise for every 1/25th part of a kilometer, whichever is applicable. Do ensure to go by the meter only.
Cabs
As cabs are generally un-metered, thus fares must be negotiated beforehand. You can even opt for pre paid taxis or cabs to avoid haggling and as an added measure of security. Tourist cabs charge Rs 4.50 per kilometer.
Rental Cars
Though driving around on your own is not recommended if you are not well versed with the local routes, there are some rental car companies in Kerala that provide cars to the intrepid traveler.
